Financed by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Ministry of Education of the Japanese government, this three-year research project will address the interactions of various traditions of magic, astrology and alchemy between the Islamicate world and the Latin West during the medieval and early modern periods. It will explore the texts attributed to Jābir and Ikhwān al-Safā’, their Latin reception/non-reception and the genesis of elusive texts such as Picatrix and Liber vaccae along with their eventual impact on Ficino, Agrippa, Paracelsus or Ps.-Paracelsus and their “reintroduction” to the Islamicate world.

This project also aims to build a network of scholars with diverse backgrounds by promoting their collaboration through workshops and publications. To that end, an international conference to commemorate the works of Keiji Yamamoto, world-renowned historian of Arabic astrology, is planned to be held in Kyoto in the fall of 2024.
